What the programme covers

Fundamentals

  • Aquifer deposits, and the physical units commonly encountered in the drilling environment.
  • Definition of a well and its components, and performance criteria.

Drilling techniques

  • Rotary drilling, down-the-hole hammer, micro-drilling and other methods.
  • Well equipment: casing, screens, cementing and gravel pack, and installation and sizing methods.
  • Well development: cleaning and completion, and the pumping test — its importance and execution.
  • Logs: their role in water wells, and in abstraction, maintenance, rehabilitation and decommissioning.

Structuring the drilling project

  • Project management, the roles of the owner and the drilling company, specifications, and financial aspects.
  • Regulatory, normative and legal considerations: administrative steps and contractual issues.
  • A full practical exercise: designing a drilling project.
