Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Understand the nature and properties of subsurface formations during underground works.
- Identify the available sources of geological data and understand their limitations.
- Infer the implications and constraints of drilling operations.
Content
What the programme covers
Characterising formations
- The nature of rocks and their constituent minerals, and their properties.
- Observing, describing and classifying rocks and minerals, and examining drill cuttings.
- Correlating rock samples with cuttings: practical methods for investigating formations.
- Geological phenomena affecting rocks: metamorphism, fracturing and deformation.
Geological representation and its operational use
- Reading and using geological maps and cross-sections according to the objective: resource management, planning and hazards.
- Locally available sources of subsurface information.
Drilling conditions and constraints
- The predictive drilling log, and selecting execution techniques according to the geological context.
- Examples and lessons learned.
Monitoring drilling activities
- Sampling and the precautions to take.
- The benefits of well logging and drilling logs.
- The drilling report: its contents and tools.
Who for
Target audience
Personnel involved in drilling activities: drillers and their assistants, supervisors, contractors and project managers.
Method
How it is delivered
Presentations, exercises on real samples and drill cuttings, and study of drilling logs.
