Geosciences
Geology and Geotechnics for Underground Development Projects
Combines the geological information required for geotechnical studies with the analysis of actual reports, plus a half-day in the field and a discussion on reading information critically.

Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Identify the geological information required for geotechnical studies.
- Identify the geological hazards associated with development.
- Interpret geotechnical measurements in the light of geology and hydrogeology.
Content
What the programme covers
Geological elements of geotechnical studies
- The context and regulatory framework of geotechnical studies.
- Geological concepts for near-surface and subsurface works: lithological variations, surface geology, conditions of formation and alteration, natural discontinuities and structures (karst, faults and folds), and man-made modifications such as cavities.
- Hydrogeological concepts: reservoir rocks, and the relationship between surface water and groundwater.
- Information sources and good practice.
Behaviour of soils and rocks in development projects
- Impacts of land development projects.
- Mechanical behaviour of soils and rocks: the relationship between geotechnical parameters, rock type and degree of alteration, and the relationship between geology and mechanical properties.
- Stability and reuse of materials, and groundwater-related hazards.
- Choosing investigation and analysis techniques in the field, in the laboratory and through modelling.
Who for
Target audience
Construction engineers and technicians, architects and contractors, and public-sector staff involved in planning.
Method
How it is delivered
Presentations, analysis of real geotechnical studies, and a half-day in the field.
A programme tailored to your organisation
The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
