Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Acquire the basic hydrogeological concepts that govern the origin, occurrence, movement and properties of groundwater.
- Understand the main quantitative and qualitative issues of groundwater resources.
- Identify the main sources of hydrogeological information.
Content
What the programme covers
Fundamentals
- Fundamentals of geology, aquifers and groundwater, and the water cycle.
- Groundwater flow, the relationship between groundwater and surface water, and aquifer types and their issues.
Groundwater monitoring
- Quantitative monitoring: the piezometer network. Qualitative monitoring: the networks of the relevant organisations.
- Water chemistry and quality, analytical parameters, contamination, and the impact of climate change.
Access to information and case studies
- Geological and hydrogeological data sources.
- Contaminant transport risks, hydrogeological exploration, hydrodynamic modelling for quantitative management, and protection of drinking water abstraction points.
