The geochemical and hydrodynamic foundations for understanding how contamination spreads in soil and groundwater, and building simple contaminant transport models.
Overview
About the programme
The geochemical and hydrodynamic foundations for understanding how contamination spreads in soil and groundwater, and building simple contaminant transport models.
Duration
3 days
Training hours
21 hours
Delivery
Training hall · Virtual · At your premises
Language
Arabic or English
Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Identify the types of contaminants and how they behave according to their properties.
- Understand the theoretical foundations of geochemistry and hydrodynamics needed to understand how contamination spreads.
- Run contaminant transport simulation models.
Content
What the programme covers
Hydrogeochemical processes
- Dilution, sorption, oxidation and reduction, natural and anthropogenic contamination, water–rock chemistry interactions, and contaminant transport mechanisms.
Contaminant migration processes
- Transport concepts in aquifers and soils: advection, dispersion and diffusion.
- Contaminant reactivity: reduction and oxidation, dissolution, ion exchange, sorption and complexation.
- Hydrodispersive and reactive modelling concepts: principles, required data, implementation and uncertainty, with a practical exercise building simple numerical models.
Case studies
- Site contamination by metals and metalloids, transport of hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents, diffuse pollution by nitrates and plant protection products, and the dual approach to contaminant kinetics.
Who for
Target audience
Engineers, managers and technicians at local and regional authorities, public institutions and consultancies.
Method
How it is delivered
Presentations, modelling exercises and case studies.
A programme tailored to your organisation
The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
