Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Understand the characteristics of coastal land where sea meets land.
- Identify potential hazards and assess specific risks and their impacts.
Content
What the programme covers
How coastal systems work
- Hazards: coastal erosion, weather-related marine flooding and tsunamis.
- Coastal hazard concepts: impact phenomena and spatial and temporal scales; hydrodynamics: waves, storm surge and currents; sediments: stock, transport and morphodynamics; reference events; and exposed elements, their exposure and vulnerability.
Measurement, monitoring and data
- Required databases: topography, bathymetry, waves, water levels and land use.
- Coastal oceanographic forecasting systems: waves, currents and water levels.
Coastal hazard assessment methods
- What historical analyses of extreme events tell us, methods for calculating return periods, erosion and flooding, map outputs and communication tools, and models: their inputs and limitations.
- Case studies with and without climate change and sea-level rise.
Who for
Target audience
Officials at coastal organisations, coastal managers and consultants.
Method
How it is delivered
Presentations and case studies.
A programme tailored to your organisation
The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
