Radiation Safety
Radiation Protection and Safety in Industry
A qualification programme for workers who handle radioactive sources and radiation equipment in industrial facilities, completed before they are permitted to work, as national regulations require. Its content and duration are adjusted to the facility's practice: nuclear gauges, industrial radiography, well logging, sources in laboratories and research, or radiation-generating equipment. Delivered at the facility on the equipment in actual use.

Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Meet the radiation protection training requirement for workers before they start working with sources, and document it for the licence file.
- Understand the actual risks of the practice carried out at the facility and its specific safe procedures.
- Use monitoring instruments and personal dosimeters correctly and interpret their readings.
- Know the limits of the worker's role, when to stop work, and how to notify the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
- Provide the correct initial response to radiation incidents on site.
Content
What the programme covers
Topic 1: Common foundation
- Ionising radiation: its sources, types and properties, compared with natural exposure.
- Dose quantities and units, occupational and public limits, and the ALARA principle.
- Biological effects, and methods of protection against external exposure and internal contamination.
- The national regulatory framework, and the responsibilities of the facility, the worker and the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
Topic 2: Facility-specific practice
- Nuclear gauges: installation, periodic inspection, safe maintenance and emergencies.
- Industrial radiography: controlled areas, cameras and source recovery.
- Well logging: neutron and gamma sources, working at the wellhead, and a source lost in the well.
- Sources in laboratories and research: unsealed and sealed sources, contamination and waste management.
- Radiation-generating equipment: accelerators and X-ray units, interlocks and warning systems.
Topic 3: Practical work and evaluation
- Radiation surveys and dose-rate measurement, and leak and contamination wipe testing.
- Reading real-time and cumulative personal dosimeters, and what to do in the event of unusual readings.
- Initial response exercise for an on-site incident.
- Final evaluation and documentation of attendance for the licence file.
Who for
Target audience
Workers, technicians and operators who directly handle radioactive sources or radiation-generating equipment in industrial facilities and laboratories, their direct supervisors, and new employees before their registration as radiation workers with the regulatory body.
Method
How it is delivered
The modules from Topic 2 that match the facility's practice are selected, and the duration is set accordingly at between 18 and 30 training hours. Delivered at your facility on the actual equipment, in Arabic or English; the theory part can be delivered virtually and the practical part on site.
A programme tailored to your organisation
The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
