Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Understand the nature of the radiation risks in the facility as far as decision-making requires.
- Know the licensee's obligations: licensing and renewal, records, personal monitoring, notification and inspection.
- Define the role and authority of the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and their relationship with management and the regulatory body.
- Make the right decisions in emergencies: stopping work, cordoning off, reporting and liaising with the authorities.
- Allocate resources to an effective radiation protection programme: instruments, training, calibration and source disposal.

What the programme covers
Day 1: Risks and obligations
- Ionising radiation in the facility: where it is, and the actual size of its risks.
- The national regulatory framework: licensing and its conditions, inspection, and violations and their consequences.
- The radiation protection programme: its elements, who runs it and how its effectiveness is measured.
- Case study: a wrong management decision in an industrial radiation incident and its cost.
Day 2: Decisions and emergencies
- The radiation emergency plan at management level: chain of command, reporting, and communication with the regulator, Civil Defence and the media.
- Procurement and disposal decisions: acquiring sources, import, transport, disused sources and safe disposal.
- Human resources: worker qualification, the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), role deputies and medical surveillance.
- Closing workshop: a quick review of the facility's situation and an action list for management.

How it is delivered
Two intensive sessions totalling at least nine training hours, with short presentations, case studies and a workshop on the facility's own situation. Delivered at your premises, in Arabic or English.
