Radiation Safety
Radiation Protection Principles and Dosimetry
An awareness and foundation programme tailored to participants' level and the organisation's needs: from a one-day awareness session for personnel working near sources to a two-day programme that adds hands-on work with survey instruments, dose measurement and wipe tests. Suitable for facility induction programmes, occupational health, safety and environment teams, and those who work near radiation sources without handling them directly.

Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Develop a correct understanding of ionising radiation, its natural and industrial sources, and the actual scale of its risks.
- Know dose quantities, units and limits, and read a dosimeter badge and understand what it measures.
- Apply the three protection principles and the safety rules in the vicinity of sources and equipment.
- Recognise radiation signs, barriers and alarms, and respond correctly to them.
- Carry out basic survey measurements and contamination wipe tests in the extended format.
Content
What the programme covers
Basic format: one day
- What is ionising radiation? Its natural and industrial sources, and the difference between radiation and contamination.
- Dose and its units, and natural exposure compared with limits for workers and the public.
- Health effects: what is certain and what is probabilistic, and correcting common misconceptions.
- Protection: time, distance and shielding, signs and barriers, and dos and don'ts.
- Initial response to a suspected radiation incident, and whom to notify.
Extended format: day two
- Detection and survey instruments: types, functional checks and limitations of use.
- Personal dosimetry: thermoluminescent and electronic dosimeters, cumulative and real-time.
- Practical exercise: radiation survey of a work area, dose-rate measurement and documentation.
- Practical exercise: wipe tests to detect surface contamination and interpretation of results.
- Short final evaluation.
Who for
Target audience
Personnel working near sources and equipment without handling them directly, occupational health, safety and environment teams, security, reception and general maintenance staff at radiation facilities, new starters in induction programmes, and personnel at water treatment plants and laboratories that use radioactive sources.
Method
How it is delivered
Simplified explanation in the participants' own terms, with examples from their work environment, and hands-on work with monitoring instruments in the extended format. Delivered at your facility, or virtually for the basic format, in Arabic or English.
A programme tailored to your organisation
The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
