Objectives

What trainees will gain

  • Mineral exploration management: the nature of exploration work, current issues, management principles and exploration strategy.
  • Business development: creating and identifying opportunities, due diligence, exploration deals and negotiation.
  • Day-to-day exploration management: project portfolios and key decisions, exploration methods and drilling.
  • Data management and advanced projects: the geochemical database and quality control, spatial data, technical reporting, resource estimation and feasibility studies.
  • Non-technical aspects and exploration success.

Content

What the programme covers

Day 1: Mineral exploration management

  • Introduction, the mining industry and exploration work, management principles and exploration strategy.

Day 2: Business development

  • Exploration concepts and a workflow exercise, and exploration methods: geology, geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing and drilling.

Day 3: Day-to-day management

  • Data management and geochemical quality control, mineral resource estimation, feasibility studies and an introduction to discounted cash flow.

Day 4: Data management and advanced projects

  • Spatial data and geographic information systems (GIS), technical reporting and advanced projects.

Day 5: Non-technical aspects

  • Human resources and administration, corporate governance and public relations, health, safety, environment and community engagement, success criteria, and case studies and lessons learned.

Target audience

Geologists newly appointed to, or being considered for, exploration management roles, and non-technical professionals who work in the sector or follow the activities of exploration companies.

Method

How it is delivered

Five daily modules from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with exercises and short quizzes.
