FAQ
Frequently asked questions about the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) Qualification Course and the NRRC exam
Questions asked before and after registration: the course, the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission exam, registration and fees, and the certificate.
About the course
What is the difference between RSO and RPO?
Two names for the same role: the facility's radiation protection officer. The NRRC uses the term Radiation Protection Officer in its documents, while the first name is common in industry. The course qualifies you for the same role whichever name is used.
Who is this course for?
For anyone who will take on the role of Radiation Safety Officer at a facility that holds radioactive sources or radiation-generating equipment: industrial radiography, nuclear gauges, well logging, laboratories and research, and the transport of radioactive materials. It also benefits safety supervisors who need a detailed understanding of radiation protection.
Do I need a scientific background to enrol?
A scientific or engineering background makes the course easier to follow, but the course starts from the fundamentals. The qualification and experience requirements for a Radiation Safety Officer licence are set by the NRRC according to the type of practice, and we recommend reviewing them before registering.
In which language is the course delivered?
The course material and instruction are in English, and the instructor answers questions in Arabic when needed.
How long is the course, and what are the daily hours?
Five consecutive days, Sunday to Thursday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, totalling 40 training hours.
What is the difference between in-person and virtual attendance?
The schedule, content and instructor are the same. In-person courses are held in a hotel conference room in Riyadh or Al Khobar, including lunch and printed material; virtual courses are streamed live via Webex with electronic material.
What do I need to attend virtually?
A computer with a camera and microphone, and a stable connection. You will receive the Webex session link and the course material link in your seat confirmation message before the course starts.
The NRRC exam
Is the NRRC exam part of the course?
No. The exam is held by the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission (NRRC), and the course prepares you for it. At the end of the course there is an evaluation by the Center, which is required for the training certificate and is separate from the NRRC exam.
How do I register for the exam, and who pays the fee?
Registration is made directly with the NRRC through its official channels, and the exam fee is paid to the NRRC and is not included in the course fees. The Center does not handle exam registration or collect exam fees.
When should I sit the exam after the course?
That depends on the dates the NRRC makes available. We recommend sitting the exam at the earliest date after the course, while the material is still fresh, and reviewing the question bank beforehand.
How does the Center help me prepare for the exam?
A curriculum designed in line with the NRRC's approved examination system, electronic course material, and a bank of more than 250 practice questions that simulate the exam, accessible from the Trainee area. The instructors also remain available for consultation after the course.
Does the course certificate mean that I am licensed?
No. The certificate confirms that you have completed training at the Center. The Radiation Safety Officer licence is granted by the NRRC after you pass its exam and meet its requirements, and the application is submitted to the NRRC by the facility or the applicant.
What if I do not pass the exam?
Retaking the exam is subject to the NRRC's procedures and schedule. The course material and question bank remain available to you, and you can contact the Center to identify the areas you need to review.
