Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Reduce the risk of fire in the workplace by understanding the fire triangle, heat sources and modes of spread.
- Distinguish between fire classes and select the appropriate extinguishing agent and extinguisher for each class.
- Maintain response readiness: detection and alarm systems, the emergency plan and evacuation procedures.
- Operate fire extinguishers and manual firefighting equipment safely in a practical exercise.
- Apply fire prevention principles and understand the role and responsibilities of the fire warden.

What the programme covers
Day 1 — Theory
- The nature of fire: the combustion process, the fire triangle and fire tetrahedron, and heat sources.
- Fire spread, intensity and modes of transfer.
- Fire classes, and detection and alarm equipment.
- Types and construction of extinguishers, and extinguishing agents: water, foam, carbon dioxide and dry chemical powder.
- Response procedures when a fire breaks out, and how to report it.
- Fire prevention guidelines, and the role and responsibilities of the fire warden.
- Written exam at the end of the day.
Day 2 — Practical
- Firefighting rules: when to fight a fire and when to evacuate the site.
- Emergency plan, evacuation and escape procedures.
- Fixed and portable firefighting equipment and its maintenance: hose reels, hydrants and fire blankets.
- Hands-on training in the use of dry powder extinguishers.

Employees of industrial and administrative facilities, members of emergency and evacuation teams, fire wardens and safety supervisors, and those assigned to first response before Civil Defence arrives.
Method
How it is delivered
Presentations, visual materials, interactive discussions and case studies, followed by a field exercise with extinguishers at the organisation's site, and a written exam.
