- Classify radioactive material and packages correctly — excepted, industrial, Type A and Type B — and understand the limits of each.
- Determine the package category, transport index, surface dose rate, and the required marking and labelling.
- Prepare shipping documents, the transport document and consignment notifications, and understand the responsibilities of the consignor, carrier and consignee.
- Apply the requirements for vehicles, segregation, stowage and physical security during transport and in-transit storage.
- Respond to transport incidents: cordoning off, surveying, reporting and coordinating with the competent authorities.
Content
What the programme covers
Day 1: Classification and packaging
- The regulatory framework for the transport of radioactive material: IAEA Regulations SSR-6, the modal agreements for road, air and sea transport, and national requirements.
- Material classification: low specific activity (LSA) material, surface contaminated objects (SCO), special form radioactive material and sealed sources.
- Package types and their requirements: excepted, industrial, Type A and Type B, package testing and approval certificates.
- Exercise: classifying actual shipments drawn from the participants' own work.
Day 2: Shipping and emergencies
