Radiation Safety

Radiation Protection and Safety in Industrial Radiography (NDT)

A programme for industrial radiographers, their assistants and non-destructive testing site supervisors, addressing the highest-risk industrial practice: high-activity gamma sources and X-ray equipment at open and enclosed sites. It covers the training requirements set by national regulations for personnel in this practice, with field exercises on setting controlled and supervised areas and emergency response.

Overview

About the programme

A programme for industrial radiographers, their assistants and non-destructive testing site supervisors, addressing the highest-risk industrial practice: high-activity gamma sources and X-ray equipment at open and enclosed sites. It covers the training requirements set by national regulations for personnel in this practice, with field exercises on setting controlled and supervised areas and emergency response.

Objectives

What trainees will gain

  • Calculate dose rates and set the boundaries of controlled and supervised areas for a gamma source or X-ray unit before each exposure.
  • Operate radiography cameras and their accessories safely: guide tubes, control cables and collimators.
  • Use survey meters and real-time personal dosimeters, and read and interpret them.
  • Handle emergencies: a source that fails to return to its position, a disconnected cable, a damaged container, and exposure of a member of the public.
  • Apply the requirements for transport, storage and records, and the responsibilities of the technician and the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) on the project.

Content

What the programme covers

Days 1 and 2: Scientific and regulatory foundations

  • Radiation physics: radioactivity, attenuation, scattering, half-life and half-value layer.
  • Dose quantities and limits for workers and the public, biological effects and acute exposure.
  • The national regulatory framework: licensing, area classification, personal monitoring, records and incident notification.
  • Shielding and safe-distance calculations for iridium-192, selenium-75 and cobalt-60 sources and for X-ray equipment.

Days 3 and 4: Equipment and fieldwork

  • The radiography camera: construction, locking, accessories, daily pre-use checks and common faults.
  • Industrial X-ray equipment: operation, warning systems, interlocks and emergency cut-off devices.
  • Setting up the exposure site: barriers, signs, alarms, continuous surveillance, and working on congested and elevated sites.
  • Field exercise: establishing area boundaries with survey meters, documenting them, and correcting boundaries after changes in site geometry.

Day 5: Emergencies, transport and evaluation

  • The radiography emergency plan: recognising the situation, cordoning off, safe source recovery using handling tools, and estimating doses received.
  • Transport and storage: classification, marking and documentation, and requirements for temporary on-site storage.
  • Case studies of documented radiography incidents and the lessons learned from them.
  • Final theory and practical evaluation.

Who for

Target audience

Industrial radiographers (Levels 1 and 2) and their assistants, NDT supervisors and safety officers in inspection companies and project contractors, and personnel working in source storage and transport.

Method

How it is delivered

Instruction and simulation of emergency scenarios using handling tools and a training source, and field survey exercises on the organisation's own equipment. Delivered at the client's site or in a venue arranged by the Center, in Arabic or English according to the participants.

A programme tailored to your organisation

The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
