Duration
4 days
Training hours
28 hours
Delivery
Training hall · Virtual · At your premises
Language

Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Calculate the speciation of an aqueous solution and simulate water–gas–solid interactions in open or closed systems.
- Model the evolution of a fluid's chemical composition with changes in temperature, pressure and salinity.
- Track the chemical composition of a fluid during the dissolution and precipitation of solid phases.
Content
What the programme covers
Foundations
- Principles of thermodynamics, the law of mass action, aqueous speciation and equilibrium.
- Concepts of concentration and activity, redox reactions, Pourbaix diagrams and bacterial activity, and thermodynamic databases.
Solution–mineral–gas interactions
- Mineral solubility and saturation indices, the Gibbs phase rule, reaction kinetics and disequilibrium, and surface complexation and ion exchange reactions.
Key factors and applications
- Effects of pH, temperature, pressure and salinity, and mixing of solutions.
- Applied cases: changes in groundwater chemistry during pumping, the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in equilibrium with a rock, bacterial denitrification, the biogeochemical behaviour of mine waste, and sorption of an organic molecule onto iron hydroxide.
Who for
Target audience
Engineers, modellers, hydrogeochemists and hydrogeologists who wish to learn hydrogeochemical modelling.
Method
How it is delivered
Exercises using standard hydrogeochemical modelling software.
A programme tailored to your organisation
The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
