Preventing Geotechnical Drought Risk — Two eLearning Modules
Understanding the mechanisms of clay soil shrinkage and swelling that damage buildings during dry periods, preventing them in construction and dealing with them when they occur.
Overview
About the programme
Understanding the mechanisms of clay soil shrinkage and swelling that damage buildings during dry periods, preventing them in construction and dealing with them when they occur.
Duration
Two eLearning modules
Delivery
Training hall · Virtual · At your premises
Language
Arabic or English
Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Understand how areas exposed to the phenomenon are identified: susceptibility and exposure maps.
- Know the precautions to take when building on soils susceptible to shrinkage and swelling.
- Know what to do when damage occurs.
- Become familiar with natural disaster regulations and how they apply to drought risk.
Content
What the programme covers
The phenomenon and its impact
- The impact of the phenomenon on buildings, the economic assessment of recent droughts, and examples of observed problems.
Shrink–swell mechanisms
- What clay soil is, the mineralogical properties of swelling clays, the physical mechanisms and triggering factors, and how drought shows on buildings.
Prevention and construction tools
- Exposure maps: methodology, production and results, and prevention plans and the information available.
- Preliminary soil investigations and recommended construction measures.
When a problem occurs
- Verifying natural disaster status, and technical inspection of shrink-swell damage: key points, remediation methods with their cost and effectiveness, and practical cases.
Who for
Target audience
Engineers and technicians at government agencies and municipalities, engineering firms and insurance companies.
Method
How it is delivered
Two self-paced eLearning modules.
A programme tailored to your organisation
The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
