What the programme covers
Day 1: Introduction to rainwater and floodwater harvesting
- Defining water harvesting in the context of arid regions, water scarcity and the potential of harvesting as a sustainable solution, and identifying suitable areas and climatic conditions.
Day 2: Rainwater harvesting system techniques and design
- Rooftop, surface runoff and subsurface harvesting, design considerations according to local needs and environmental factors, and practical design exercises for different applications.
Day 3: Floodwater harvesting and management
- Floodwater characteristics and potential, the design of harvesting structures (check dams, detention basins and channels), and integrating floodwater harvesting with rainwater harvesting systems.
Day 4: Implementation and policy framework
- Project planning and implementation strategies, assessment of economic and environmental benefits, and supporting policy and regulatory frameworks in Arab countries.
Day 5: Case studies and field visit
- Successful projects in the region, a field visit where available, and group discussions.
