Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Provide trainees with theoretical knowledge and core concepts in hydrology, hydrological analysis and flood risk.
- Apply hydrological analysis in practice using modern software.
- Identify the factors that influence flood formation and estimate stormwater runoff.
- Learn conventional and non-conventional methods of flood risk management.
- Review the engineering manuals issued by authorities in the Kingdom to ensure the quality of hydrological studies.
Content
What the programme covers
Introduction to flood risk
- The science of hydrology, flash flood studies and terminology, floods as both a hazard and a water source, and how floods form and the factors that influence them: rainfall, soil, weather conditions and topography.
Hydrological data analysis
- Steps for analysing and interpreting rainfall, soil and vegetation data with GIS tools and statistical analysis, and estimating hydrological loads and expected flood flows.
Flood risk management
- Conventional methods using hydraulic structures for storage and diversion, and non-conventional methods: early warning, emergency planning and response.
Stormwater runoff estimation
- The Rational Method and the SCS Curve Number method, explained in detail with their conditions of application.
Hydrological and hydraulic models
- HEC-HMS models for runoff estimation, HEC-RAS for analysing flood movement and spread, and models for designing floodwater storage and conveyance structures.
Case studies and review of engineering manuals
- Protecting a real site from flood risk, proposing and designing protection works, and reviewing the engineering manuals issued by various authorities in the Kingdom.
Who for
Target audience
Engineers, technicians and specialists in flash floods and flooding at regional and local municipalities, roads and water authorities, and consultancies.
Method
How it is delivered
Theoretical explanation, hands-on application in software, and a case study.
A programme tailored to your organisation
The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
