Content
What the programme covers
Drilling fundamentals
- The five features common to all drilling methods.
Exploration drilling methods and techniques
- Drilling methods common in mining applications, with a focus on diamond core drilling, rotary percussion and dual-tube reverse circulation.
Common drilling calculations
- Seven essential calculations that geologists, project managers and supervisors must master to manage technical and quality aspects.
Drilling fluids
- Functions and properties of drilling fluids and foams, and design of surface circulation systems.
Borehole surveying and core orientation
- Why boreholes are surveyed, types of survey instruments, using survey data, and common survey errors.
Economics of exploration drilling
- Principles of the drilling contract, how the contractor makes a profit, and how the project manager affects its profitability.
Drill site safety
- Fundamentals of hazard identification and risk assessment, principal hazards and their controls.
Drilling contracts and tenders
- Variable-rate, fixed-cost and minimum-shift contracts, principles of preparing and evaluating tenders, and the drilling time model and its use in bid evaluation.
Who for
Target audience
Anyone with a role in managing an exploration project: geologists, project managers, exploration supervisors and safety officers.
Method
How it is delivered
Five days from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with presentations, applied calculations and cases.
