Surface formations and their geotechnical behaviour
A programme developed and supervised by geotechnical engineers and geologists specialising in surface formations: those formed during the Quaternary, how they behave geotechnically, and how they interact with human activity.

Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Identify the surface formations that developed during the Quaternary.
- Determine the geotechnical behaviour of these formations.
- Understand their use in planning and risk management, and their interaction with human activities in general.
Content
What the programme covers
Theoretical concepts
- Geology of Quaternary surface formations in coastal and continental environments.
- Geological and geotechnical investigation tools.
- Natural hazards and their implications for urban development.
Dynamics of surface formations
- Ground movements associated with covered karst.
- Alluvial and gravitational dynamics, and weathering-related phenomena.
- Aeolian dynamics: loess and its relationship to erosion and runoff hazards.
Erosion, transport and deposition
- Aeolian, gravitational and coastal deposits.
- Geotechnical constraints of alluvial deposits, and erosion of agricultural soils.
- Coastal dynamics and hazards, and their application to coastal development.
Geomorphology and hazards
- Geomorphological concepts, and gravitational dynamics in low-energy environments.
- Ground movement and its impact on agricultural development.
- Defining the hazards, and methods of prevention and reinforcement.
Who for
Target audience
Engineers and managers in geotechnics, planning and environment, and geologists working in urban development.
Method
How it is delivered
Theoretical presentations, regional examples and field trips.
A programme tailored to your organisation
The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
