Objectives
What trainees will gain
- Understand the possible applications of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) for reducing emissions.
- Identify the technical, regulatory and safety conditions for underground storage of carbon dioxide.
Content
What the programme covers
Module 1: Context and technologies
- Climate change and the role of carbon dioxide, targets and means of reducing emissions.
- Capture and storage technologies: returning carbon underground, the three links of capture, transport and storage, operations under way worldwide, and challenges and prospects.
- Regulation and standardisation: international regulations, and standards under development for capture, transport and storage.
Module 2: Geological storage
- The main objectives of underground storage, geological criteria for selecting and characterising storage sites, technical and financial means of characterising the storage complex, site performance assessment, and storage site security and monitoring.
- Application potential: major sedimentary basins, and schemes linking emission sources to storage sites and users.
