Environment
Operating and Calibrating Field Environmental Instruments
A hands-on programme in operating the field instruments environmental inspectors use for air, noise and water measurements, checking and calibrating them before use, and keeping the records that make the results defensible.

About the programme
Duration
3 days
Training hours
15 hours
Delivery
At the organisation's facility

Objectives
Training outcomes
- Understand measurement principles, accuracy, drift and the factors that affect field readings.
- Operate portable gas detectors, dust monitors, sound level meters and water quality meters correctly.
- Carry out bump tests, zero and span checks and field calibrations with calibration gases, acoustic calibrators and standard solutions.
- Recognise faulty instruments and readings, and take the right action.
- Keep calibration records and certificates, and understand traceability to recognised standards.
Content
What the programme covers
Day 1: measurement principles and gas detectors
- Measurement basics: accuracy, precision, resolution, drift, response time and interferences.
- Calibration concepts: bump test versus full calibration, zero and span, calibration gases and standards, traceability and uncertainty.
- Portable multi-gas detectors (O₂, H₂S, CO and LEL): operation, checks and calibration.
Day 2: dust, noise and emissions
- Particulate monitors (PM10 and PM2.5): operation, checks and calibration.
- Sound level meters and acoustic calibrators: weighting, time response, field checks and measurement procedure.
- Stack emission analysers: principles, pre-measurement checks and calibration with reference gases.
Day 3: water, records and assessment
- Multi-parameter water quality meters (pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and turbidity): standard solutions, calibration and probe care.
- Field practice: pre-use checks, recording readings and handling out-of-tolerance results.
- Records and quality: instrument registers, calibration schedules, certificates, labelling and maintenance logs, followed by the practical assessment.
Who it is for
Target audience
Environmental inspectors who take field measurements, monitoring technicians, and the staff responsible for instrument registers and calibration schedules.
Method
Delivery method
Hands-on training on the centre’s instruments in every session; the centre brings them with calibration gases, acoustic calibrators and standard solutions. Training on the organisation’s own instruments can be added only for models the instructor knows, once the organisation shares the models and their manuals and the centre confirms in writing which of them can be included. Delivered in person at the organisation’s premises, in Arabic or English.
Questions
FAQ
Which instruments is the training done on?
On the centre’s own instruments, covering the main categories inspectors use: gas detectors, dust monitors, sound level meters, water quality meters and emission analysers.
Can the training use our instruments?
Only for models the instructor knows. The organisation shares the models and their manuals in advance, and the centre confirms in writing which of them can be included.
Is there a certificate?
Every participant who passes the practical assessment, a pre-use check and a calibration recorded on the forms, receives a certificate of completion from Technology Experts Training Center, licensed by the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation.
A programme tailored to your organisation
The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
