GIS for Environmental Inspection (ArcGIS and QGIS)
A practical programme for environmental inspection teams: planning inspection routes and schedules in GIS, entering inspection data into the organisation’s environmental information system, and preparing and submitting each report type through the approved procedure.

Objectives
Training outcomes
- Work in ArcGIS Pro and QGIS with facility, boundary and road data.
- Plan inspection routes for multiple facilities, taking distance, travel time and visit duration into account.
- Build inspection schedules by priority, risk and required visit frequency, and present them on maps and calendars.
- Enter inspection records into the environmental information system accurately and completely, with locations, photographs, attachments and validation checks.
- Prepare each report type and submit it through the correct review and approval procedure.
Content
What the programme covers
Day 1: foundations and the inspection map
- GIS fundamentals in ArcGIS Pro and QGIS: layers, attribute tables and the coordinate systems used in Saudi Arabia.
- Building the inspection map: facility registers, permit data, boundaries, road networks and base maps.
Day 2: field data collection
- Mobile field forms and apps (ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123 and QField), GPS locations and photographs.
- Field data quality and common errors.
Day 3: routes and schedules
- Optimal routes for multi-facility inspection trips: travel time, visit duration and start and end points.
- Scheduling inspections by risk, permit category and visit frequency; weekly and monthly plans; assigning tasks to teams.
Day 4: data entry in the environmental information system
- Data standards, required fields, location accuracy, attachments, validation and error correction.
Day 5: reports and submission procedures
- Report types: inspection, follow-up, violation, monitoring and periodic reports, with the content, maps and evidence each needs.
- Review, approval, submission, tracking and archiving procedures.
- Applied exercise: plan a week of inspections, enter the results and submit the reports, followed by the assessment.
Who it is for
Target audience
Environmental inspectors, inspection planners and team leaders who schedule visits, and the staff who enter data and submit reports in the environmental information system.
Method
Delivery method
Hands-on training in which every participant works on the software throughout: each exercise in ArcGIS Pro with the equivalent QGIS steps, built on one complete inspection scenario. Data entry, report types and submission procedures are taught on the organisation’s own system; for this the centre needs a training account, the user guides and the report templates before the programme. Delivered in person at the organisation’s premises, in Arabic or English.
Questions
FAQ
Does the programme need ArcGIS licences?
The programme uses ArcGIS Pro through the organisation’s licences or Esri’s free trial licence, and the free QGIS for every equivalent step, so participants can keep working after the programme without licence costs.
Is the programme taught on our own environmental information system?
Yes. Data entry, report types and submission procedures are taught on the organisation’s own system once the centre receives a training account, the user guides and the report templates; the organisation’s system administrator may join those sessions.
Is there a certificate?
Every participant who passes the practical assessment receives a certificate of completion from Technology Experts Training Center, licensed by the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation.
A programme tailored to your organisation
The duration and topics of the programme are adjusted to the organisation's needs, and it is delivered at its site, in a training hall arranged by the Center, or virtually.
