What trainees will gain
- Understand hazardous materials in the contemporary operational environment and distinguish them from chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats.
- Use the Emergency Response Guidebook, read hazardous materials markings and use decision-support software.
- Select and use personal protective equipment: respirators, masks and encapsulating suits.
- Apply detection, hazard identification, cordoning, casualty rescue and carrying techniques.
- Carry out emergency procedures, terminate hazardous materials incidents and hand over the site.
Content
What the programme covers
Day 1
- Hazardous materials in the contemporary operational environment, CBRN threats versus hazardous materials, the Emergency Response Guidebook, and supporting civil defence in hazardous materials incidents.
Day 2
- Selection of personal protective equipment, preventive measures, cordoning, casualty rescue and carrying techniques, an introduction to respiratory equipment and protective masks, hazardous materials markings, and decision-support software.
Day 3
- Detection and hazard identification techniques, basic exercises for the response group, Emergency Response Guidebook scenarios, and discussion of the weekly summary.
Day 4
- Tour of the training site, issue of protective equipment, use of respirators and encapsulating suits, basic exercises, and emergency procedures with a casualty.
Day 5
- Interactive exercises, diking, damming and sealing techniques, termination and handover of hazardous materials incidents, wrap-up and evaluation.
